Health in Hamirpur

In spite of its small size, Hamirpur has adequate numbers of health units within its city limits. The town has one Zonal Hospital, one Ayurvedic District Hospital, five civil dispensaries, one homeopathic dispensary within its Planning Area. Beside these, quite a few well equipped private hospitals have also opened their units here.

Zonal Hospital at Hamirpur

The Zonal Hospital, located in Agriculture Colony in Hamirpur, started as a rural medical centre. When Hamirpur became the district headquarters in 1972, the center was upgraded to a District hospital. It became a Zonal Hospital much later in 1992.  By a conservative calculation, more than one thousand patients visit this hospital every day. Although the authorities are trying their best to cater to such a large number of patients, certain facilities need to be improved immediately,

Currently, the hospital has 380 beds; but considering the number of patients who visit the hospital each day, the number of beds needs to be increased immediately. Moreover, the in-house medical shop does not always have the required medicines; as a result, poor people of the region have to buy medicines from outside shops at a higher price. Sometimes, lack of qualified doctors also jeopardizes proper treatment. The experts have also recommended installation of some specialized facilities such as CT scan, MRI etc.

Fortunately, all these factors are being addressed with due importance and when that is done, the hospital will be able to cater to the needs of the people of the entire area. Right now, patients have to be shifted to super specialty centers at Shimla or Chandigarh for specialized treatment.

Block/community hospitals and subsidiary centers:

The Zonal Hospital in Hamirpur town not only caters to the needs of the population of the town, but people from far flung areas also come here for their treatment. Nonetheless, the district also has community health centers at Barsar, Nadaun, Galore, Sujanpur Tira and Bhoranj. Moreover, it also has a civil hospital at Touni Devi. Besides, there are 152 sub centers and 6 dispensaries across the district.

Ayurvedic District Hospital and Homeopathic Dispensaries

The Department of Indian System of Medicine and Homeopathy also plays a vital role in providing health care to the people of Himachal Pradesh. In Hamirpur too one can avail Ayurvedic or homeopathic treatment if he/she wishes to. According to the available data, the entire district has three Ayurvedic hospitals under the jurisdiction of a District Ayurvedic Officer. There are also 69 Ayurvedic dispensaries across the district. One such Ayurvedic hospital is located in Hamirpur town. The town also hosts a homeopathic dispensary.
