Tourism in Hamirpur

Hamirpur, located in the south western part of Himachal Pradesh, is indeed a tourist’s paradise. Covered by the Shivalik range of mountains the town enjoys pleasant weather almost throughout the year. Since the average altitude is about 738 m (2,421 ft), compared to other parts of Himachal Pradesh, the summer may seem a little too hot; nonetheless, the higher temperature is well compensated by the beauty of the place.

Hills in Hamirpur

Just as in any other place in Himachal Pradesh, Hamirpur too abounds in natural beauty. The Jhak dhar, one of the main hill ranges that run through the Hamirpur district, lies to the west of the town. Here, the undulating terrain covered by pine forests presents a picturesque view. However, the scenery changes, as the visitors move towards the north. Here one finds bare hills with steep fall and deep ravines. Poets have compared this place with an agitated sea that has suddenly turned into stones. In fact, if the tourists make Hamirpur their center and tour around the country side, they are sure to come across many such wonders of nature.

Apart from Jhak Dahr, Chabutra Hills is also another great attraction for the nature lovers.  It has the same deep fall as Jhak Dhar has. Although the infrastructure is not yet fully ready, call of the mountains here is too strong for the trekkers to ignore.  We see them camping and trekking in the hills of Hamirpur, especially around SujanpurTira. 


Masyana Ghat, located at a distance of 7 Km from Hamirpur town on Hamirpur-Galore Road is another interesting spot.  From here, one can watch the Kunah and Sukkar Khad meandering by. This is indeed a place, where one can spend a whole day loitering among the hills, visiting the huge chabutra under which people from near and far used to come and sit. There is also an ancient temple on top of a nearby hillock; it houses the patron deity of this village.  To be sure, the place has all the potential for tourist attraction; only some of the modern facilities need to be added. However, such lack of facilities should not deter a nature lover; contrarily it should add to the charm of the place.

Adventure Sports in Hamirpur

Hamirpur, with its hilly terrain and numerous water bodies, is an ideal place for adventure sports. Along with trekking, Sujanpur Tira also offers facilities for paragliding. It is also a good place for angling and rafting. Nadaun, situated on the banks of River Beas, is another good place for such river sports. The town provides excellent opportunity for Mahaseer fishing and river rafting.

Religious Spots in Hamirpur

Himachal Pradesh is said to be the land of gods and goddesses; that is why this land is called Dev Bhumi by the pious. True enough, the state is dotted with temples of various sizes. Hamirpur too share this fame. Some important temples in and around Hamirpur are:

Other than the above, there are the Markanda Ashram and Radha Swami Satsang. The former is located on the bank of Kunah Khad; it is said to be the place where the Puranic saint Rishi Markanda used to live. A hot water spring is located nearby. Radha Swami Satsang is located at Bhota. The Satsang also runs a charitable hospital there.

Beside these temples, two other significant places of worship are Shri Gurudwara Saheb Patshahi in Nadaun and Peer Saheb Mazaar at Bharmoti on Nadaun-Hoshiarpur Road. While the former is associated with the memory of Guru Gobind Singh, the later is the resting place of Sai Fazal Shah.

Historical Places in Hamirpur

However, unlike rest of the Himachal Pradesh, Hamirpur is not just about scenic beauty and places of warship. Known as Veer-Bhumi, Hamirpur’s history is deeply embedded with the gallantry and sacrifice. Sujanpur Tira, founded by Raja Abhay Chand and Naduan Fort of Raja Sansar Chand bear testimony to such claims.

What is more, the ruined fort of Mahol Morion of Hamirpur can invoke strong sentiments in those who love heroic tales because this is the place, where two fierce battles between the Gorkhas and the Katoch king Raja Sansar Chand were fought. It may not be out of place to mention that Kaoch kings lost their supremacy over this area when they lost the second battle and took shelter in Kangra. Therefore, it can be safely said whatever may be their inclination; visitors will always find Hamirpur a fascinating place.
